Portland summers off to a slow start

By Rod Hill on 2011-08-09

While many think this summer is perfect, others would like a little heat.  To date, Portland has not reached 90 degrees. In fact, July became the 1st since 1993 not to do so.  As of today, August 3rd, the warmest temperature at PDX has been 87 degrees.

1993 did not reach 90 degrees until August 3rd and then went on to reach 90 again Sept 9th.
1954 was a year that was extremely cool and never reached 90 degrees.  Below are the mean temperature averages:
July 1954:  below normal 5.1  /  Aug 1954: minus 5.3 / Sept 1954: minus 3.1
July 1993:  below normal 3.9 /  Aug 1993:  minus 0.1 / Sept 1954: above +2.4
July 2011:  below normal 1.4
Current forecast charts show highs mostly 80-84 degrees with no 90s through Aug. 20th.  As you can see 1993 went on to have a warm finish to the summer season.
